About this course

On the eve of the Summer Solstice, walk with us from West Dean College to the Devil's Jumps a monumental Bronze Age burial site of five bell barrows built to align with the setting sun.

Meet at the front of West Dean House at 3.30pm.
Finish at 9.00pm by walking down to the Royal Oak pub where taxi's will collect you at 9.30pm and take you back to the college.

Course Description

This walk celebrates not only the summer solstice but Pallant House Gallery’s exhibition British Landscape: A Sense of Place combined with West Dean’s former artist in residence Haroun Hayward’s exhibition, Path through Trees. We will be walking through woodland, pasture and the deserted Medieval Village of Monkton before arriving at the Devil’s Jumps and if the weather is fine, the spectacle of watching the sun slowly drop below the horizon, in line with the barrows is a phenomenon.

The walk is six miles over uneven and sometimes steep terrain. We advise comfortable walking equipment including a rucksack, water bottle, something to sit on, weather appropriate clothing and footwear.
