Course Description

This course is part of our Making Skills: Degree and Diploma Taster Week, a themed series of short courses that teach foundation skills and offer an insight into studying one of our Higher Education courses at West Dean.

They cover a variety of subject areas and are taught by selected tutors who teach on the Degree and Diploma courses at West Dean, giving students a real insight into the opportunities available for full or part time study. They also offer an excellent opportunity to create and build on your portfolio, often a key requirement when you apply for a higher education programme, develop you practical making skills and find out if you would like to pursue further study.

There will also be opportunities to Meet the Tutors on Tuesday 8 September, with an evening event starting at 5:15pm in The Old Library, where each tutor will give a 10 minute talk about their practice and course. Workshop and studio tours will also be scheduled as part of the week, offering students the chance to see the full range of facilities and courses West Dean offers.

Course details
The primary aim of this course is to support and develop the students individual language in printmaking. We will ensure that confidence is given to the students to enable future independent work in print using the facilties they have access to. We will cover both press use and hand printing.

Throughout the course, we will work as a group and on individual work. It is however vital that students understand this is only 4 days and that it is best to approach this course as a learning exercise to strengthen, develop and build confidence in core printmaking techniques. There will be opportunity to develop individual requirements, but there will also be many group exercise to ensure as much information is delivered over the time of the course.

Mary will be supporting you all along the way, making sure that each of you gain the maximum out of the time we have. Key techniques covered will include various approaches to intaglio printing (intaglio on lino, drypoint), relief work (lino, environmount, a touch upon collograph) and some lithographic work (litho on lino, photo litho). It is an intense course and much to learn so please do make sure you are able to document as you go!

The course will be fun, engaging and lively and Mary’s natural teaching style will encourage enthusiasm for the processes. This is a physical course. You will be up and down a lot so please do make sure you are able to meet these needs.
