About this course

Please note that this workshop is only bookable by West Dean Foundation Diploma in Art and Design students (FDAD). Course Description

This workshop introduces meditative drawing processes that explore weaving as both a strategy and a metaphor. Students will investigate how ideas of weaving can generate new ways of working, using systems, notation, repetition, layering, twining, tension, mapping and difference to generate abstract forms. Drawing will extend beyond the page through the use of thread, paper, movement, sound and space, with opportunities to explore weaving as a sculptural and installation-based practice

What will students explore?:

Students will experiment with drawing using pencil, charcoal, paint, pins, thread, physical movement and vocal sound. They will cut, twine and weave images and materials, exploring connections between drawing, weaving, music, dance and choreography. There will also be opportunities to construct larger woven drawings within the studio space.

What will students develop?:

Students will develop a series of focused experiments that can feed into future projects, while building confidence in interdisciplinary thinking and developing ideas through collaborative working. They will explore connections between drawing, weaving, sound and physical movement, and discover new ways of thinking, drawing and making.
