Course Description

Discover the image-editing power and management of Adobe Lightroom Classic. You will learn the interface, workflows and possibilities Adobe of Lightroom Classic– from importing photographs to detailed manipulation, enhancement and output.

This course aims to introduce you to the creative image editing power and image management of Adobe Lightroom functions and sub-modules, and to enable confident and capable interpretation of the photograph in respect of exposure, colour, clarity and image finishing.

The structure of the weekend will be the workflow of Lightroom itself, beginning with importing files (with an understanding of storage, keywording and labelling) – moving on to detailed manipulation, enhancement and output, and how to export photographs for a range of purposes.

The differences between file types is explained before importing some photographs captured during an excursion into West Dean Gardens.

The course covers:

  • An introduction to the raw file and processing options within Lightroom
  • Contextualising Lightroom within the Creative Suite (Adobe Photoshop, The Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw)
  • An introduction to the Lightroom interface, work area and panels
  • Workflow techniques: importing files and using import presets
  • Overview of the Library module to manage files, keywording, rating and accessing meta data
  • Using compare and survey modes
  • Understanding and managing the histogram to recover highlights and shadow detail
  • Introduction to the develop module (exposure, white balance, vibrance and saturation)
  • Local adjustments (cropping, spot removal, red eye removal)
  • Automating adjustments to multiple files
  • Converting images to black and white to maximise tone and impact
  • Finishing files by reducing noise and sharpening
  • Creating HDR and panoramas
  • Exporting files

Course Materials

What students need to bring

  • A digital camera (preferably with manual settings), fresh/charged batteries, charger, memory card, and instruction manual
  • A tripod (not essential)
  • A notebook and pen
  • A laptop (optional)
  • A USB (large storage capacity) or portable hard drive storage device (plus connecting leads) via which images can be transferred to your own computer at the end of the course or for saving work in progress

Bring a note of your own Adobe ID login.  If you don’t already have one, please register for a free account at www.adobe.com prior to the course, and remember to bring the details with you.

Please note: The course is for up to 8 participants.  While each will be allocated a PC workstation,  other equipment provided in the studio, may be shared amongst the group

Timetable

Arrival day - first date of course
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration  
Student welcome, followed by dinner: 6.45pm (dinner included)
Teaching session: 8pm-9pm (attendance is essential)

Daily timetable
Course teaching: 9.15am-5pm  
Morning session: 9.15am-12.45pm including coffee/tea break  
Lunch break: 12.45pm-2pm (lunch included)  
Afternoon session: 2pm-5pm including coffee/tea break  
Teaching finishes: 5pm    
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Departure day - last date of course
Course teaching: 9.15am-3pm (lunch included)  
Teaching finishes: 3pm  

Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am.

Tutors

Tim Savage

Dr Tim Savage is a photographer, artist, teacher, and author. His PhD research focuses on how technical skills are taught and learned in the creative arts. He holds an MA in Photography and is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Tim serves as the Director of Technical Learning at the University for the Creative Arts, in addition to writing books and publishing articles for the UK photographic and educational press. He has also conducted over 100 photographic short courses at West Dean where his courses have been shortlisted in the Adobe Global Educators Awards.
