Diploma in Art and Contemporary Crafts (DACC) students Mary Hennessey Jones, Sarah Johns and Robin Bray-Hurren have set up a new reading group with the aim to look at art history through a feminist and queer theory lense. This bi-monthly group meets in the Library and is open to all West Dean staff and students. A text, film or other media is selected to discuss at each meeting.
Marian Bleeke's Considering Female Agency: Hildegard of Bingen and Francesca Woodman was chosen as the first text for its accessibility and the breadth of interest it offered readers. The author considers similarities between two women artists practising in medieval times and the twentieth century and how the development of the interpretation of women’s voices has evolved over this period of time within the arts.
The founders of the group, who are in their second year of the DACC programme said; ‘It will be very interesting to see how the group develops and makes connections with the West Dean unique legacy in art history and the College’s future in art education.’
