You will be introduced to the notion of intaglio print and how to go about working your ideas onto a printing plate and through into print. Marks, lines and areas of tone can be made using an etching needle, craft knife and other tools, with surprising results.
The Tetra Pak cartons, once flattened, have an interesting character of their own, and you will be encouraged to make use of the folds, marks and shapes offered up by the cartons to both inspire and become part of the finished prints.
You will start by making a test plate and ink it up to put through the press. This way you can get to know the medium and experiment with the kinds of marks that you want to make whilst generating ideas to develop your own images. Your tutor will support you with demonstrations, examples and conversation in support of your developing ideas.
The College will provide Tetra Pak cartons, good quality printing paper, cartridge paper, tissue paper and card per student, and some black ink, scrim, blotting paper, newsprint and masking tape to share amongst the group.

Student registration: 10.30am - 11am
Course teaching: 11am – 5.15pm
Morning session: 11am - 1pm
Lunch break: 1pm - 2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon session: 2pm - 5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
Teaching finishes: 5.15pm
Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the Materials to bring section.
Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

Short course students are required to sign a safety compliance form as part of West Dean Health and Safety regulations.

Jane has an MA in Contemporary Visual Art from Falmouth College of Arts. An experienced facilitator, she has worked with Carnival Collective, Rocket Artists and Fine Art Printmaking students at the University of Brighton. Jane has exhibited in London, the Southeast and internationally and is a director at East Side Print, Brighton.
