For this workshop we will work on one drawing for the two days, starting with a 2D block-in and working this through to a fully rendered portrait either in pencil and/or charcoal. We will cover gesture, proportions, the importance of shapes in capturing a likeness, value arrangement, form modelling and how to finish a drawing.

We will be working on paper toned with charcoal powder as having an established half-tone is useful for creating a more finished drawing when time is limited.

The workshop is suitable for all levels of drawing ability and you can expect multiple critiques tailored to your individual requirements. You should expect an enjoyable and informative weekend and to come away from the course with the know-how to develop your drawings further when working on future pieces.

Included

On this course the College will supply paper, charcoal powder and drawing fixative. A model will also be provided for the duration of the course.

What students need to bring

• Graphite drawing pencils - 4B, 2B and H; any brand is fine
• Vine or Willow Charcoal - one or two pieces
• Craft knife and sharpening pad
• Faber Castell Kneaded Eraser (blue one)
• Tombow hard eraser pen
• Small soft brush for moving graphite and charcoal around
• Knitting needle (or something similar for measuring)
• Something to carry work home in (suitable for carrying A2 paper size)

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Student registration: 10.30am - 11am
Course teaching: 11am – 5.15pm 
Morning session: 11am - 1pm
Lunch break: 1pm - 2pm (lunch is not included)
Afternoon session: 2pm - 5.15pm (15 minute break, 3.30pm–3.45pm)
Teaching finishes: 5.15pm  
 

Short courses are open to anyone aged 18 and over. The course fee covers tuition and materials where stated. You will need to bring all other items listed under the ‘Materials to bring’ section.

Refreshments

Coffee and tea are included in the course fee, but you will need to bring lunch with you to eat in the refreshments room. There are also plenty of other local venues to purchase food.

There is a small lift to higher floors or stairs.
