About this course

You will be introduced to the delights and mysteries of glass engraving, gaining confidence with drills and burrs while learning how to design and engrave a simple decorated letter on glass.

Course Description

This one?day course offers a perfect introduction to the delights and mysteries of glass engraving, aimed at beginners with no prior experience. You will be guided through the fundamental skills and processes needed to start engraving glass safely, confidently and with enthusiasm – and a drill.

You will begin by experimenting with a small range of engraving tools, learning how different burrs and drill speeds create marks on the surface of practice glass. This exploratory approach allows you to build familiarity with the tools and gain confidence in controlling them before moving on to a finished piece. As the day progresses, you will develop a simple design and learn how to apply a drawing accurately to the surface of the glass. You will then engrave a decorated letter onto a glass tumbler, bringing together mark?making, design placement and tool control.

Throughout the course, your tutor will demonstrate techniques and provide clear guidance, with a balance of group discussion and individual tuition. You will also be introduced to the practical considerations of glass engraving, including the types of glass suitable for engraving and the essential equipment needed to continue working independently.

You will learn about:

  • Using drills and burrs for glass engraving
  • Making controlled marks on glass surfaces
  • Transferring and positioning a design on glass
  • Basic approaches to lettering and decoration
  • Understanding glass types and engraving suitability
  • Safe working practices and equipment use

This beginner?level course is ideal if you are curious about glass engraving and want a supportive, hands?on introduction that demystifies the process and opens up further creative possibilities.
