Simon Lycett Raids the Gardens of West Dean: Join for An Afternoon of Floral Fabulousness 10 Oct 2026 with Simon Lycett

For decades, West Dean has championed creatives and artists, shaping and influencing the grounds and gardens that surround this remarkable setting. This demonstration explores those garden spaces as both inspiration and material.

Simon Lycett will gather seasonal stems from across the gardens, “plundering borders and beds” to create a series of floral decorations in response to the landscape. Working intuitively with what is available, his arrangements will reflect the character of the gardens and the creative legacy of those who have shaped them. As Simon puts it, he is “slipping his nifty size sevens into the footsteps of such iconic creative giants,” embracing the spirit of place through flowers.

Throughout the session, Simon will be in conversation with horticulturist Annie Guilfoyle, sharing observations, reflections and anecdotes as the work unfolds. Their dialogue brings an added layer of insight, exploring both the horticultural context and the creative process behind each arrangement.

This is a demonstration-led session rather than a practical course. You will observe the making process and gain insight into how seasonal plant material can be selected and used to create decorative arrangements inspired by place, with the gardens providing both context and content.
