Painting the figure in oils is both challenging and rewarding, and oil paint makes an exciting medium for life drawing. During the course, you will look at how to develop methods and strategies for developing life drawing, working with life models, starting with dry drawing media and progressing to using paint looking at tone, mark-making and colour palettes. The aim of the course is to enable you to use oil paint in a life drawing situation.

You will be able to relate the techniques of drawing to the physical properties of oil paint.
The model who will sit for the course and some A2 card will be provided.
A good variety of art materials are available to buy at the Garden's Gatehouse Shop.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
Arrival day - first date of course
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration
Student welcome, followed by dinner: 6.45pm (dinner included)
Teaching session: 8pm-9pm (attendance is essential)
Daily timetable
Course teaching: 9.15am-5pm
Morning session: 9.15am-12.45pm including coffee/tea break
Lunch break: 12.45pm-2pm (lunch included)
Afternoon session: 2pm-5pm including coffee/tea break
Teaching finishes: 5pm
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.
Departure day - last date of course
Course teaching: 9.15am-3pm (lunch included)
Teaching finishes: 3pm
Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am.

Alan studied at Edinburgh College of Art and Newcastle Polytechnic, and has taught drawing and anatomy for over twenty years in places such as The Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, Edinburgh College of Art, Bristol School of Drawing and Leith School of Art. His work has been exhibited at the BP Portrait Award, the Threadneedle Prize, the Society of Portrait Sculptors exhibition and he was a semi-finalist for Sky Portrait Artist of the Year 2014.
