Collagraph is a very versatile and creative technique for making prints from a collaged plate. You will use an etching press to make your prints.
The plates are built on a card surface by both sticking and carving. During the course, you will gain experience in how to construct plates by glueing textured papers and other materials to the base, as well as cutting and carving into it to make a range of marks and effects when printed. You will also learn about Chine collé. This is a method of introducing colour or graphic elements to your print using lightweight papers as part of the printmaking process.
You will be encouraged to be experimental with mark-making and to explore what can be achieved with the technique, and you will leave with a small collection of samples and prints.
On this course the tutor will supply some of the materials, including shellac, some textured papers, some Chine collé papers, some printing inks and wiping compound, and good quality paper to print on.
On this course the College will supply some of the materials, including newsprint, blotting paper, adhesive, cleaning solvent, rags and scrim to share amongst the group.
Available from shop: A good variety of art materials, including pens and pencils, A3 folders, notebooks, sketchbooks, sandpaper, plus any extra inks and paper if you need them.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
Arrival day - first date of course
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration
Student welcome, followed by dinner: 6.45pm (dinner included)
Teaching session: 8pm-9pm (attendance is essential)
Daily timetable
Course teaching: 9.15am-5pm
Morning session: 9.15am-12.45pm including coffee/tea break
Lunch break: 12.45pm-2pm (lunch included)
Afternoon session: 2pm-5pm including coffee/tea break
Teaching finishes: 5pm
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.
Departure day - last date of course
Course teaching: 9.15am-3pm (lunch included)
Teaching finishes: 3pm
Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am.

Joanna tutors with a focus on surface qualities and 2 dimensional design. She trained initially in Printed Textile Design at Manchester and then in Ceramics at The Royal College of Art. She has 30 years of teaching experience in colleges, universities, schools, museums and galleries. Joanna is a long standing member of Contemporary Applied Arts.
