About this course

Learn to create high-quality photographs with your phone (taught on iPhone/Apple Photo app, Android also welcome). Master focus, exposure, composition and light, then edit and share using Lightroom Classic to create a polished mini-portfolio.

Course Description

Modern smartphones are exceptionally capable cameras; the difference between an average snapshot and a strong photograph is usually not the phone, but how you see, compose, control light, and finish the image. This practical course will help you get the very best from your phone camera in a way that is repeatable, purposeful, and transferable to other devices, such as iPads, tablets, or other smartphones.

Working with the West Dean estate as an inspiring location, you will be guided through the key features that matter most: focus and exposure compensation to manage tricky lighting conditions, composing purposeful landscapes, and making stronger portraits (including how to direct a subject and use Portrait mode naturally). We will also explore useful creative options such as panoramas, close-up/macro (where supported), low-light and flash techniques, and introduce video functions such as timelapse, cinematic, and slow-motion.

You’ll then learn a clear, non-destructive image editing process. First, you’ll edit on your phone using the Apple Photos app or your equivalent: selecting your best images, refining crops and horizons, improving tonal balance and colour, and preparing images for sharing. Finally, you’ll bring your images into Adobe Lightroom Classic, with more powerful professional standard tools that you’ll use to create a consistent, polished finish across a mini-series, with options to share via social media, portfolio use, or printing.

By the end of the course, you will have a small, finished set of images and a workflow you can repeat with confidence.
