Andy Pankhurst

Andy Pankhurst studied at the Bournemouth and Poole College of Art (1984-86) and the Slade School of Fine Art (1986-92). A figurative painter and teacher, Andy’s work is represented in public, corporate and private collections in the UK and USA. He is represented by Browse & Darby, London and is the co-author, with Lucinda Hawksley, of the book ‘What Makes Great Art’.

Describe your approach to teaching
I teach students 'ways of thinking' rather than 'how to do it' and that all Art is abstract and conceptual. Each work has to be ‘about’ something.

What inspires your own work?
Visual ideas, normally without narrative, come about by chance and fate. In the attempt to manifest these sensations, my concerns are formal and analytical, striving towards the beauty that is right.
