Damon Smallman

Damon is a world-renowned classical guitar maker from Australia.

Born in 1975 in Glen Innes, New South Wales Australia.

At a very early age, Damon played on the floor of his father Greg (Smallman)’s workshop with guitar making tools watching, listening and soaking up information. Eventually learning how to make guitars with these philosophies and principals.

Surrounded by a family atmosphere of making, building and improving things while growing up in the remote bushland of Australia Damon developed his great practical passion for understanding how things work.

Out of necessity of their remote harsh environment Damon also learnt how to repair and create almost anything with practically nothing. Damon has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Newcastle in N.S.W Australia specialising in advanced materials and composites.

Making guitars with his brother Kym and Greg while constantly learning and searching together for ways to improve the sound continues to be extremely challenging and rewarding. Since 2018, Damon and his wife the classical guitarist Ingrid Riollot travel the world together giving lecture-demonstrations on the History and Design of the famous Australian classical guitars of world renowned “Smallman Guitars”.

Accompanying Ingrid Riollot on concert tours since 2015, Damon has expanded his skills to include PA and studio engineering for live sound amplification and recording of classical guitars, complementing his guitar-making experience by being involved first hand in their practical application with professional guitarists.

Damon makes his own machine heads and has developed a unique double microphone system for live sound amplification of the classical guitar.

Smallman guitars have been played for more than 40 years by many world-renowned classical guitarists.
