About this course

West Dean Heritage Craft Week
Immerse yourself in the rich traditions of heritage crafts with our Heritage Craft Week and learn time-honoured techniques from expert instructors. Whether you're a beginner eager to explore a new craft or an experienced artisan looking to refine your skills, you'll not only acquire practical skills but also connect with a deeper sense of history and craftsmanship.

This four-day workshop introduces you to the fundamentals of bookbinding. We will cover basic paper technology, an introduction to adhesives, material appreciation, sewing thread, hot foil work, and the correct use of hand tools and bindery equipment. All materials are included, and no previous knowledge is required.

Course Description

The workshop aims to introduce you to Flat Back Case Binding and Slip Cases. Your tutor will help you identify the correct materials for this binding style, and develop an understanding of both its applications and limitations. You will learn to apply the relevant techniques and assess the suitability of the style for 3 different projects.

Topics covered include:

  • Basic paper technology
  • An introduction to adhesives
  • Material appreciation
  • Sewing thread
  • Hot foil work
  • The correct use of hand tools and bindery equipment

By the end of the course, you will be able to make suitable text blocks for this binding style, forward books and a slip case to the required standard, and work with accuracy and precision in measuring and cutting. You will also become familiar with variations in sewing, covering, corner making, and endpapers, while applying safe working practices with hand tools and bindery equipment.
