This course invites you to explore the art of hand-printed and hand-stitched lampshade making, offering a comprehensive, hands-on experience in designing, carving, printing, and assembling your own unique lampshade. Under the guidance of an experienced tutor, you will gain the skills needed to transform your designs into a finished, gathered lampshade, blending traditional craftsmanship with creative expression.
The workshop begins with an introduction to the principles of printmaking. You will be guided through the tools and materials required for drawing, carving and block printing. You will develop your design ideas, carve your own printing blocks, and learn techniques for transferring your patterns onto fabric, creating a personalised textile ready for lampshade assembly.
Once your fabric is printed, the focus shifts to constructing the gathered lampshade. You will learn how to calculate fabric requirements, prepare the lampshade frame, and secure the printed material using hand-stitching techniques. Emphasis is placed on creating a neatly gathered exterior and pleated lining, achieving symmetry, texture, and a professional finish.
The course concludes with the application of a hand-stitched self-bias trim, a hallmark of traditional craftsmanship, providing both a polished appearance and lasting durability. Throughout the workshop, you are encouraged to experiment with colours, patterns, and textures, allowing your personality and artistic vision to shine through.
By the end of this course, you will have a complete hand-printed, hand-stitched gathered lampshade ready to take home. This workshop is ideal for anyone wishing to develop new skills in printmaking and lampshade construction, refine their creative practice, or craft a truly one-of-a-kind piece for their home.
On this course, the tutor will supply all the tools and materials.
