About this course

This course is designed for those with some experience of working with clay and who wish to challenge themselves. You will be introduced to new approaches and techniques to building a textured slab form and taught how to control the material to create a flowing form.

Course Description

This three-day course is for intermediate to advanced students who wish to explore the techniques the tutor often uses in his own work to make textured three-dimensional slab-built artefacts, and to have fun whilst doing so. The course will be relaxed and informative. The tutor’s aim is for everyone to explore the limits of the material so that they have a better understanding of what can be achieved.

The aim of this course is not to walk away with a box of wares, but rather to learn and enjoy the process. You will be able to choose a piece that will be bisque-fired and can be collected to be decorated at your leisure using the methods taught.

At the end of the course, you will have the confidence to make similar forms and return to your studios with the energy to question and explore all of your skills learnt to date. As no two makers will work in the same way, it is important that you explore and show off your own strengths rather than working towards those of others.

Course Materials

Included

The cost of clay and firing costs of work made is included – especially large work in size and quantity may be charged extra.

The tutor will supply some of the materials, including wires, textured rolling pins and formers available for use in the course, to supplement other equipment for use in the pottery.

What students need to bring

  • Any clay modelling tools you may have,
  • An old tea towel (without holes) or any other cloth for rolling clay on
  • An apron and covered non-slip footwear in the studio
  • Notebook/sketchbook and pencil

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio; this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Possible equipment restrictions in the tutor's absence.

Firing options

  • Fill in the form supplied and leave your most successful raw, finished pieces for biscuit firing. You may also book an underglaze day to decorate your work (these are offered occasionally and additional costs apply) and leave for re-firing by the College, for collection within six months.
  • Take away your unfired sculpture for firing and under glazing elsewhere.
