On this practical course, you will be introduced to gelatine printing plates as a vehicle for printing with both drawn and photographic material, image transfer and frottage.
You will spend time walking in the West Dean Gardens, travelling along the paths and throughways. Engaging with ideas of marking, trace and imprint as you move through the grounds of the College, you will collect materials (photographic, drawn and text- based information) to take back to the studio.
Gelatine printing plates have a sensitive surface that can be worked upon to make experimental prints on a variety of papers. They work well with the transfer of imprint, photographic and charcoal drawings. You will be able to make test prints on paper, building up a series as you develop your ideas.
Frottage will be introduced as an additional way to generate drawn material by taking rubbings directly from the environment, and by using collected material to build images from.
Your tutor will support you with demonstrations, examples and conversation in support of your learning the techniques, and in developing a series of experimental prints through the media on offer, sharing inspirations and the work of other artists along the way.

On this course, the College will supply most of the materials, including a variety of papers and card, some charcoal and a water-soluble graphite stick per student plus printing medium, water based paint for printing and PVA glue to share amongst the group.
