The course will begin with a visit to Petworth House to gain inspiration from the gardens where Turner himself was inspired to paint. There will be a chance to see the permanent collection held at the house, which includes a variety of Turners paintings on show.
You will work outside in the gardens where you will gather a range of research materials through drawing and photography which will be used as a starting point to make a series of small scale Turner inspired acrylic paintings. These in turn, will then be developed onto a larger scale back at the studio at West Dean.
You will be exploring the different properties of acrylic paint to evoke ideas of atmosphere and space. There will be technical demonstrations as well as a lecture on the history of landscape paintings
At the end of the course you will have gained greater knowledge and confidence in the use of acrylic, colour mixing and compositional devices.
On this course the College will supply some of the materials including cellophane and cling film for making a palette, a range of acrylic paints, warm and cool variations of the primaries as well as the earth colours, ink, cartridge paper and masking tape.
Available from shop: A good selection of art materials including acrylic paints, hog hair brushes in a range of sizes (14, 10, 8 and 6) plus a household decorators brush 3 inches in size, palette knives, palettes, paper, sketchbooks and masking tape.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Please wear layers for painting outdoors, and suitable for the season, including sunscreen/sunhat.
The College will provide transport for the visit to Petworth House.
Arrival day - first date of course
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration
Student welcome, followed by dinner: 6.45pm (dinner included)
Teaching session: 8pm-9pm (attendance is essential)
Daily timetable
Course teaching: 9.15am-5pm
Morning session: 9.15am-12.45pm including coffee/tea break
Lunch break: 12.45pm-2pm (lunch included)
Afternoon session: 2pm-5pm including coffee/tea break
Teaching finishes: 5pm
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am.

Phil Tyler trained at Loughborough College of Art and Design, Virginia Commonwealth University and Brighton Polytechnic. He has taught for 33 years and runs the Printmaking Degree at Brighton. He has appeared on Sky Portrait artist of the year twice and has a track record of exhibiting nationally and internationally.
