Jamie Fairchild
Jamie Fairchild is an expert in the cleaning and surface treatment of historic buildings. He provides technical support, training, consultancy and CPD to practitioners, contractors, specifiers and architects.
The removal of soiling or paint is not just an aesthetic consideration, but a physical intervention which may also have short and long term physical effects on the fabric itself. Deposits can be harmful to masonry but may be benign or even benificial. We will look at how and why cleaning has changed and current published guidance and legislation. You will learn how to identify the key types of soiling and coatings and understand how these interact with different stone types, brick, terracotta and render. We will use a wide range of techniques and equipment in the demonstration and hands-on sessions including making poultices and gels. This will help you appreciate how each discriminates (or not!) between soiling and substrate. The course is aimed at the full range of conservation professional from planner and specifier to practitioner.
