About this course

This course is designed to give students an insight on the specialised world of arms and armour conservation. By the end of the course students should be able to correctly identify different types of arms and armour from around the world and be aware of some of the complex problems associated with their care, display and conservation. Students will be able to handle and work on a selection of replica and original pieces under the guidence of one to one tuition and group discussion. They should leave the course with a much better understanding of the world of arms and armour conservation and what is needed in order to remedy some of the common conservation issues these objects have.

Course Description

This course is ideal for conservators, curators, graduates, collectors and anyone interested in the care and conservation of arms and armour in general.

It provides an introduction to a vast subject area, giving students a brief background to the different types of arms and armour throughout the world, the conservation problems associated with them and how to safely approach the diverse and often complex issues of continuing care and problem solving. Students will have the opertunity to handle and work on original pieces under the supervision and guidance of two tutors who have , between them, spent over 60 years working in this field .

Course Materials

What students need to bring

Attendees are advised to wear practical clothing that they don't mind getting dirty or stained and to bring their own preferred protective clothing, if they wish eg: lab coat, overalls or a bib-type apron. Gloves will be provided.

This course is ideal for ongoing professional development or those with background interest in the subject. Some hand skills would be useful.

Timetable

Arrival day - first date of course
Residential students can arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm for registration  
Student welcome, followed by dinner: 6.45pm (dinner included)
Teaching session: 8pm-9pm (attendance is essential)

Daily timetable
Course teaching: 9.15am-5pm  
Morning session: 9.15am-12.45pm including coffee/tea break  
Lunch break: 12.45pm-2pm (lunch included)  
Afternoon session: 2pm-5pm including coffee/tea break  
Teaching finishes: 5pm    
Evening working: students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with permission from the tutor and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Departure day - last date of course
Course teaching: 9.15am-3pm (lunch included)  
Teaching finishes: 3pm  

Residential students will need to check out of rooms by 10am.

Tutors

David Edge

David Edge is currently Armourer Emeritus at the Wallace Collection, having been its Armourer and Metals Conservator since 1975, and for many years, Curator of Arms and Armour as well.  He was appointed Head of Conservation in 2004.

Deborah Lee

Deborah Lee is a visiting lecturer at West Dean and freelance Metals Conservator, specialising in Arms and Armour.
